Honoring the Women of Wounded Knee | 50th Anniversary TRAVELING EXHIBIT

Warrior Women’s traveling exhibit offers a different approach to understanding the events of Wounded Knee ‘73. Visitors hear first-hand from women who were on the ground during the occupation and organizing behind the scenes. Life size banners, photographs and oral histories create an intimate, immersive learning experience. The community knowledge becomes part of our living history. Diverse voices and understandings replace singular narratives.

History has impact when told within community, and it doesn't end here - this is a traveling exhibit and online archive that continues to expand.

The exhibit is build upon from decades of oral history interviews, forming a rich and multi-faceted experience that sheds light on the often-overlooked narratives of indigenous women. These women’s stories are brought to the forefront through this exhibit. The approach to sharing these hidden histories is not just about recounting events but about honoring the experiences, struggles, and resilience of these women. This thoughtful presentation of the women's biographies, co-written with living narrators when possible, give context to their contributions and experiences. The exhibit's launch in Porcupine, SD as part of the Wounded Knee 50th Anniversary events marked a significant step in preserving and honoring the legacy of these warrior women, ensuring their stories continue to inspire and educate future generations.
