Earthship

The Warrior Women Earthship Decolonization Project is a grassroots effort to create a community based in decolonization in which Indigenous people are empowered to reclaim traditions and work toward a better future. We plan to accomplish this in four main areas:

Marcella Gilbert on the Cheyenne River Reservation land where the build will take place.

Example of an Earthship.

Example of an Earthship.

  1. Work with Earthship Biotecture, Inc., to offer an Earthship Academy on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota. The Earthship Academy will provide a “show and tell” environment in which to learn how to build an off-grid housing structure. The Warrior Women Decolonization Project will enhance this experience by organizing workshops focused on solar and wind energy, composting facilities, small scale food production and preservation, and erecting a yurt. Support of the Earthship Academy would allow local tribal people to participate and learn skills to create their own self-sufficient housing environments.

  2. Grow and manage our own foods by building greenhouses to grow vegetables and fruit and utilize the wild edibles native to the lands around us.

  3. Provide a safe environment for children and youth to help them build confidence and success in becoming empowered adults.

  4. Develop our own educational system based in cultural systems of empowerment to decolonize our minds and our environment.
